Backyard Motocross Tracks
Well, this is really what we're all about. To us, there are few things as enjoyable as spending a day at a backyard MX track with a handful of good friends. Where to you find these gems? Well, sometimes that's easier said than done. The bottom line is don't give up.
Locating the tracks is best accomplished by getting involved in the local motocross scene. It might be visiting the local motorcycle dealerships and asking around. Mention it to your friends, your co-workers, your neighbors, your church members - anyone you can think of. In my city, there's currently even an ad on Craigslist from someone searching for a place to ride. In summary, the more feelers you can get out, the better your chances of scoring big time.
In my situation, I was fortunate that I had a neighbor who co-owned a motorcycle trailer with his buddy. He and his buddy had recently sold their dirt bikes and gear with the exception of a trailer - which I purchased. I went to the buddy's house to pick it up and struck up a conversation about where to ride. He told me of a local backyard track not far from where I lived. He also told me to ride out there to take a look - which I did.
The track owner wasn't there but a father and son were just loading up after a day of riding. He was very friendly and showed me around the place. I mailed a letter to the owner stating that basically I would release him from all liability if he would let me and my family ride there. Fortunately, he agreed to let us come out and give it a try.
To make my long story short, that was about two years ago. I now have access to a great practice track that's about 20 minutes from my house. Paradise!
When you find someone willing to give you a chance, remember that it's a two-way street. In return for getting the opportunity to ride, what can you give the property owner in return?
In my case, I sometimes help out with cash when he has the track manicured or purchases more mulch. Several times a year I'll take my weedeater to the grass on the jumps, whoops, berms, etc. (where the tractor cannot cut). I'll keep an eye on the owner's son while he rides so the owner can get other things done. I pick-up rocks, fallen limbs, trash and generally keep the place looking good. In short, we always treat the place as if it were our own. That's earned me the priviledge to ride whenever I want. Believe me when I say I don't take this lightly. And you shouldn't either.
