Chain Lubrication

The good thing about lubing your chain is it protects your investment by making it perform very well.  The bad thing is it serves as a magnet for dirt, dust and general yuckiness.  So before lubricating your chain, make sure it's clean again.  This is easiest done using a rag and/or wire brush.  After all, you're trying to lube the chain itself, not the dirt that covers it.

One you have it clean, apply the proper chain lubricant.  Most people use the aerosol sprays that are very convenient.  Apply liberally to all parts of the chain (not just the parts easy to get to) while spinning the rear tire - but don't over-do it.  It's better to lubricate more frequently using smaller amounts than to use the whole can at once.

Don't forget to lubricate the chain after all bike washings - but dry the chain first.  It's best not to spray in the direction of your disc brake too for obvious reasons.

Stay away from the WD-40 as it contains solvents and isn't good for chain lubrication.

While lubricating your chain, be sure to check your sprockets for excessive wear.
