Cleaning Air Filters

If keeping your engine oil clean is your first priority, then keeping your air filter clean is a close second.  Your engine needs air to breathe but if it gets dirt with that air, you may be replacing the  cylinder too.

How often you clean your filter will depend on where you do your riding.  Obviously, the dustier the conditions, the more frequent the cleanings.  As with your engine oil, err on the side of cleaning it too often.

Cleaning a filter can be a pain so the easier you make it, the more likely you'll do it properly and as often as you should.  Start by purchasing an extra filter (or two or three).  That way you'll always have a clean filter on hand.  Just put in a clean one after you wash your bike and clean the dirty filter later.  By doing that, you'll also allow the cleaned filter the proper time to dry before re-oiling.

As for cleaning/oiling, I'm a spray on kind of guy.  It's easy but messy.  Some people use plastic gloves to keep their maincures looking good.

During each cleaning, make sure to examine the filter for any holes or tears.  If you find one, retire the filter from service and replace it with a new one.
