Loretta Lynn's Amateur National Motocross Championship
Every sport has its pinncle event and for amateur motocross, it's no doubt the annual get-together at Loretta Lynn's Dude Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee (about 75 miles west of Nashville).
Amateur racers from all over the US compete in local and regional qualifying events which culminate in early summer. The Nationals take place around the first week of August. The heat, the humidity, the 3 motos over the course of 5 days and THE PRESSURE, make this undoubtedly the toughest race in which these amateur racers compete. Because of this, rest assured a win here will rank at the top of their amateur accomplihsments.
The list of Loretta's past champoins definitely reads like a Who's Who of the sport: Mike Alessi, Gary Bailey, Mark Barnett, Damon Bradshaw, Mike Brown, Jimmy Button, Ricky Carmichael, Jeff Emig, Tim Ferry, Mike Larocco, Jeremy McGrath, Davi Millsaps, Travis Pastrana, Jeff Stanton, James "Bubba" Stewart, Ryan Villopoto, Kevin Windham, Nick Way and Kevin Walker.
Who's Kevin Walker you ask? Well, he's just a pretty good racer from Tennessee who, with his two championships in 2007, passed Bubba Stewart and Mike Alessi to become the winningest champion ever at Loretta's. Kevin sits atop the leaderboard with 13 championships as compared to 11 each for Bubba and Mike (a fellow named Carmichael has 9).
